About Wevise
Wevise is a nonprofit founded in 2022. Our mission is to make careers in the technology industry more attainable and build a more diverse and inclusive tech community through equitable access to mentorship, education, and career opportunities. We’re a team of volunteers from diverse backgrounds who are committed to leveling the playing field in tech (and beyond).
In June 2023, we launched our inaugural program - a mentorship platform crafted for individuals seeking personal or professional mentorship, particularly those from economically marginalized backgrounds or facing unique challenges. In 2025, we conducted our first Cohort - the TechPath Alliance - in Chicago. The Alliance is a partnership between Wevise and local companies and nonprofits that ran a 6-month career development and mentorship program for marginalized and underserved emerging technologists. In 2026, we plan to launch Cohort 2 and Cohort 3 to test the hypothesis that our mentoring program has an impact on the communities we serve.
The Role
We are looking for a motivated Lead Engineer to serve as our CTO and lead our technology strategy. This role is a unique opportunity to work in a startup-like environment within the nonprofit tech sector. Your contribution will not only accelerate your professional development but also offer profound satisfaction as you directly impact lives through technology. You'll continue to build and lead a dedicated development team, guiding them towards fulfilling our mission.
Responsibilities
- Strategic Technology Leadership: Own the development and execution of our technology roadmap, ensuring that the technology strategy supports the organization's goals. Act as the technical authority on the selection and utilization of open-source and third-party tools.
- Team Management: Mentor and support a dedicated technical team, fostering an environment of learning and growth. Determine when more talent is needed in various technical roles and lead the “hiring” and onboarding process to grow the team.
- DevOps: Build and maintain standard processes for the development, deployment, and maintenance of our hosted platform environment, emphasizing quality, security, and performance.
- Product and Design Collaboration: Collaborate with other organizational leaders to drive product development, ensuring our offerings effectively meet the needs of our community.
Requirements
- Demonstrated leadership experience in a technology-focused role, ideally within a startup or nonprofit environment.
- A proven track record in software development, including familiarity with modern technologies and frameworks.
- Strong problem-solving skills, with a capacity to lead and adapt in a multifaceted, purposeful organization.
- Excellent interpersonal skills, with the ability to mentor team members and collaborate across departments.
- A commitment to contributing a minimum of 10 hours a week to Wevise.
