About the Role
Boats Group is looking for a hands-on Engineering Manager who thrives at the intersection of code and leadership. You're the kind of engineer who still loves getting into the weeds — debugging a production issue, estimating a new feature, or pairing with a developer to unblock them — but you've also discovered that your biggest impact comes from multiplying the people around you.
You'll own the end-to-end health of our engineering teams: the quality of what ships, the growth of the people building it, and the systems and practices that make both sustainable. Our products are high-traffic, consumer-facing web platforms, and you'll bring experience from a similar environment. The ideal candidate will have experience in an environment where marketplace dynamics, buyer/seller flows, or consumer discovery experiences have shaped how you think about product and scale.
This role is hybrid, requiring 3 days per week in our Miami office (Tue–Thu), with remote flexibility on Mondays and Fridays.
What You’ll Do
Be a technical anchor for your team
- Stay close to the code, contribute directly when it matters, providing credible technical guidance every day.
- Know when to back off and let your team drive.
- Partner with Software Architects to drive solution design and provide meaningful architectural feedback.
- Lead troubleshooting of critical production issues with urgency and clarity.
Ship great consumer experiences
- Collaborate across product, design, and engineering to define, build, and deliver high-quality features for high-traffic web platforms
- Champion engineering standards that keep our consumer-facing products fast, scalable, and reliable.
- Balance forward progress on new features with modernizing and replacing legacy solutions.
Maximize your team
- Coach and mentor engineers at all levels and creating clear growth paths and a culture of continuous learning/curiosity
- Foster a high-ownership, low-friction team environment where developers do their best work
- Drive Agile/Lean practices that keep delivery predictable and teams focused
Help shape where we're going
- Stay sharp on the modern web development landscape and bring well-reasoned recommendations on what Boats Group should adopt
- Document systems, processes, and architectural decisions so knowledge scales beyond any individual
What You Should Have
Must-haves
- 8+ years of industry experience building and shipping consumer-facing web products at scale
- 2+ years leading and managing software engineering teams
- A genuine "player-coach" mentality — you lead through doing, not just directing
- Strong fundamentals in web services (RESTful/RPC), JSON, stateless polyglot services
- Solid architectural knowledge across frontend, backend, and data layers
- Experience with CI/CD pipelines, unit/integration testing, and modern deployment practices
- Fluency with both relational and NoSQL databases
- Hands-on experience in one or more of: Node.js / hapi.js, React, Next.js, Java, browser-side JavaScript, HTML5
- Cloud experience with AWS (preferred) and container orchestration with Kubernetes
- Bachelor's degree in Computer Science or related field, or equivalent experience
Strong differentiators
- Experience building or scaling a marketplace, listings platform, or two-sided consumer product
- Track record of improving team velocity, quality, and engineering culture.
- Comfort operating in a high-traffic, high-availability environment where reliability is non-negotiable
