About The Role

The New York Times is looking for a Director of Engineering in our Growth organization to lead 3 groups of 3 engineering managers and ~20 engineers. You will report to the VP of Engineering of the Growth Mission, and work with leaders across Design, Product, and Data to provide experiences that help grow our business. Your work will include growing long-term revenue by getting subscribers to stay longer and pay more, managing Enterprise subscriptions, and allowing customer care agents to address customers' problems easily through agent-assisted and self-service tools. This is a hybrid role based in our New York City headquarters. You can typically expect to come into the office two days/week.

Responsibilities

  • Manage a team of ~20 engineers and 3 Engineering Managers in B2B, Customer Care, and SubRev (Subscriber Revenue) groups to grow our long-term revenue, reduce churn, and build systems for Care agents and Enterprise CSMs (Client Success Managers)
  • Work with group leads to strategize, allocate staff, and balance engineering teams to support business goals
  • Stay up-to-date with overarching technologies (e.g. GenAI), business, and legal requirements
  • Work with client teams and dependency teams to ensure strategies and expectations are aligned and processes are compatible
  • Support and empower managers and engineers reporting to you in their career growth by agreeing on expectations, understanding their goals, identifying challenges/areas of conflict, and providing constructive feedback
  • Contribute to our broader engineering organizational efforts, including tech strategy, hiring, career development, hybrid work, and other company-wide programs
  • Demonstrate support and understanding of our value of journalistic independence and a strong commitment to our mission to seek the truth and help people understand the world.

Basic Qualifications

  • 3+ years of experience leading multiple complex engineering teams with 1+ years of experience managing managers
  • A technical background to advise your teams and other functional partners on a technical issue, communicate technical challenges and tradeoffs, identify dependencies, and negotiate functionality/timelines with other engineering teams
  • A grasp of the primary technologies and engineering challenges facing consumer products and subscription businesses
  • Experience establishing processes and defining goals and metrics to iterate and improve over time
  • Comfort with managing engineering managers and giving them the support, context, and latitude to be effective

  • A track record of data-driven decision-making and taking ownership of outcomes
