Overview
We are seeking a Director of Engineering to lead high-performing engineering teams and deliver scalable, reliable software products. This role is ideal for a technical leader who can balance execution, architecture, and people leadership—building strong engineering culture while partnering closely with Product, Design, and Data teams.
The Director of Engineering will own engineering delivery, team growth, and technical excellence—driving predictable outcomes, quality, and continuous improvement.
Key Responsibilities
Engineering Leadership & Delivery
- Lead multiple engineering teams to deliver roadmap commitments with high quality and predictable timelines.
- Establish planning discipline across squads (estimations, sprint planning, backlog grooming, retrospectives).
- Translate product strategy into execution plans, milestones, and resourcing needs.
- Balance scope, timelines, and technical constraints while maintaining team health.
- Identify and remove blockers; proactively manage dependencies across teams.
- Create visibility via clear status reporting, delivery metrics, and risk management.
- Improve release management practices to support safe, frequent deployments.
Technical Strategy & Architecture
- Guide system design decisions for scalability, performance, reliability, and maintainability.
- Partner with Staff/Principal Engineers to define architecture standards and review processes.
- Drive technical debt strategy and ensure it’s prioritized alongside product work.
- Strengthen engineering quality via coding standards, testing strategy, and code review culture.
- Ensure systems are designed with security, privacy, and compliance requirements in mind.
- Champion platform improvements (observability, CI/CD, infrastructure, tooling).
- Align technical roadmap with business growth and product evolution.
People Management & Culture
- Hire, coach, and develop engineering managers and senior engineers.
- Build succession plans and leadership bench strength across teams.
- Implement career ladders, performance cycles, and competency frameworks.
- Foster a culture of ownership, accountability, and continuous learning.
- Improve team engagement and retention through thoughtful management practices.
- Support healthy engineering rituals (design reviews, postmortems, knowledge sharing).
- Create inclusive, collaborative team environments that scale.
Operational Excellence
- Strengthen reliability through incident management, postmortems, and SLO/SLA practices.
- Implement monitoring and alerting best practices to reduce downtime and improve response.
- Drive continuous improvement in SDLC efficiency (lead time, cycle time, deployment frequency).
- Ensure appropriate documentation, runbooks, and onboarding materials exist.
- Partner with Security/IT to support audits, access controls, and compliance initiatives.
- Improve performance testing, load testing, and capacity planning disciplines.
- Standardize engineering KPIs and use them to guide decisions.
Cross-Functional Collaboration
- Partner with Product to define scope, prioritize tradeoffs, and align on outcomes.
- Collaborate with Design to ensure high-quality UX and execution.
- Work with Data/Analytics teams on instrumentation, experimentation, and measurement.
- Align with Customer Success/Support on feedback loops and incident escalation processes.
- Communicate progress, risks, and technical tradeoffs to executive stakeholders.
- Influence roadmap decisions with technical insights and long-term thinking.
Qualifications
- 8–12 years of software engineering experience, including 3–5+ years in leadership roles.
- Proven track record shipping complex products/platforms and scaling systems.
- Experience managing managers and building multi-team execution processes.
- Strong judgment in prioritization, tradeoffs, and decision-making under constraints.
- Excellent communication skills with technical and non-technical stakeholders.
Technical & Engineering Skills
- Strong experience with cloud platforms (AWS/GCP/Azure) and distributed systems.
- Expertise in CI/CD, automated testing, observability, and production operations.
- Familiarity with microservices, APIs, databases, and event-driven architectures.
- Working knowledge of security best practices and privacy/data handling considerations.
- Ability to evaluate new tools/tech pragmatically and drive adoption.
Leadership & Attributes
- Execution-focused: builds predictability and delivers outcomes.
- People-first leader: develops talent and builds strong culture.
- Systems thinker: improves processes and technical foundations.
- Clear communicator: aligns stakeholders and sets expectations early.
- High bar for quality while moving fast.
Preferred Qualifications
- Experience in B2B SaaS, AI/ML products, fintech, or regulated domains.
- Experience leading distributed or global engineering teams.
- Exposure to platform modernization, scaling infra, or cloud cost optimization.
- Background working closely with product-led growth or enterprise sales motions.
Why This Role
