Job Description
Job Summary:
The Director of Engineering provides strategic and operational leadership for engineering teams supporting classified and unclassified government programs. This role ensures the delivery of technically sound, compliant, and mission‑critical solutions in accordance with contract requirements, security regulations, and customer expectations. The Director of Engineering partners closely with Program Management, Operations, Quality, Security, and Business Development to execute programs, grow technical capabilities, and support new business opportunities.
Detailed Description
Engineering Leadership & Strategy
- Lead and develop engineering managers and technical staff supporting cleared government contracts.
- Establish and execute engineering strategies aligned with program objectives, customer requirements, and corporate goals.
- Promote a culture of accountability, technical excellence, compliance, and continuous improvement.
Program Execution & Delivery
- Oversee engineering execution across multiple programs, ensuring adherence to cost, schedule, technical, and security requirements.
- Support Integrated Product Teams (IPTs) and collaborate with Program Managers to manage risks, dependencies, and technical performance.
- Ensure engineering deliverables meet contract specifications, Statement of Work (SOW), and Contract Data Requirements Lists (CDRLs).
Technical Oversight & Compliance
- Provide technical oversight for system design, development, integration, test, and sustainment activities.
- Ensure compliance with applicable standards and regulations, including FAR/DFARS, DoD directives, ITAR/export controls, and customer-specific requirements.
- Ensure engineering processes align with quality standards (e.g., ISO, AS9100, CMMI) and cybersecurity requirements (e.g., NIST, CMMC).
Security & Cleared Environment Leadership
- Ensure engineering teams comply with all security policies for handling classified information and working in cleared facilities.
- Partner with Security and IT to maintain secure systems, facilities, and workflows.
- Reinforce security awareness and accountability across engineering staff.
Talent & Resource Management
- Lead workforce planning, hiring, onboarding, and succession planning for cleared engineering roles.
- Mentor and develop engineering leaders and high-potential technical talent.
- Manage engineering budgets, labor forecasts, and subcontractor or vendor technical performance.
Business Development & Customer Engagement
- Support proposal development, technical volumes, Basis of Estimates (BOEs), and solution architecture.
- Participate in customer meetings, technical interchange meetings (TIMs), and design reviews.
- Provide technical insight to support capture strategies and program growth.
Requirements
- Bachelor’s degree in Engineering or a related technical field.
- 10+ years of progressive engineering experience, including 5+ years in engineering leadership roles.
- Experience leading engineering teams supporting DoD, Intelligence Community, or federal government programs.
- Strong knowledge of engineering lifecycle processes in a regulated or classified environment.
- Demonstrated ability to lead cross-functional teams and manage complex technical efforts.
- Active Secret clearance, or eligibility to obtain and maintain one.
Preferred Skills/Experience
- Master’s degree in Engineering, Systems Engineering, or Business Administration.
- Experience in systems engineering, software engineering, aerospace, defense, or mission systems.
- Familiarity with EVMS, Agile in government environments, and technical performance metrics.
- Experience with proposal development and new program startup.
- Prior experience managing engineering organizations within a cleared facility.
