About the Opportunity:
The organization is developing an AI-powered back office for skilled trades, beginning with the HVAC industry. The goal is to streamline administrative workloads for small contractors by combining agentic AI with human-in-the-loop operations. The team seeks a hands-on CTO to lead the technical development of this platform and scale the engineering and product organization.
Responsibilities:
- Set the technical vision and architectural blueprint for the platform and workflow engine
- Design scalable, event-driven, AI-enabled systems to support growth and complex workflows
- Collaborate with Product and Operations to prioritize features and define the technical roadmap
- Make architecture and build vs. buy decisions for long-term growth
- Establish engineering best practices, code quality standards, and technical processes
- Recruit, mentor, and grow a high-performing engineering team and future technical leaders
- Ensure engineering efforts align with organizational goals, performance metrics, and operational needs
Requirements:
- 10+ years of software development experience with architectural or systems design leadership
- Experience owning technical direction or platform strategy at a startup or high-growth company
- Proven ability to build and lead engineering teams
- Experience making technical decisions regarding architecture, infrastructure, scalability, and AI integration
- Ability to introduce process and structure without slowing innovation
- Strong communication and collaboration skills across technical and non-technical teams
- Comfortable making decisions in fast-moving, ambiguous environments
- Motivation to solve real-world problems and build systems that unlock human potential
- Preference for candidates in the greater Boston area or willing to relocate (bonus)
- Experience scaling engineering organizations (bonus)
- Experience with event-driven or workflow-based systems (bonus)
- Experience integrating human and AI collaboration in products or operations (bonus)
- Knowledge of the skilled trades, HVAC, or similar service industries (bonus)
