Assistant Director of Engineering

The Assistant Director of Engineering supports the Director of Engineering in all aspects of managing the resort’s physical assets, technical operations, and engineering team. This role ensures the safe, efficient, and reliable operation of all building systems while maintaining the highest standards of guest satisfaction, operational excellence, and asset protection. The Assistant Director plays a key leadership role in preventative maintenance, energy management, capital planning, and contractor oversight.

Qualifications & Skills Required

  • Engineering degree or equivalent technical qualifications.
  • Proven experience in an engineering or maintenance leadership role within a luxury hospitality environment.
  • Technical training and hands‑on experience in HVAC‑R, electrical, and plumbing systems.
  • Strong knowledge of building services, mechanical systems, industrial kitchen equipment, landscaping, and general resort engineering operations.
  • Proficiency with Computerized Maintenance Management Systems (CMMS), preferably Transcendent.
  • Experience with Building Management Systems (BMS); Johnson Controls system experience preferred.
  • Excellent communication skills—both verbal and written—with strong reading comprehension.
  • Strong mathematical reasoning and ability to read blueprints, schematics, and technical drawings.
  • Deep knowledge of fire and life safety systems, hazardous materials, and chemical handling.
  • Experience in equipment maintenance planning and selection for hotel or resort environments.
  • Prior experience in a 5‑star luxury resort is required; island resort experience preferred.
  • Demonstrated ability to inspire, lead, and develop teams.

Preferred / Advantageous

  • Professional certifications such as LEED, CFM, or AEP.
  • Experience contributing to capital planning and large-scale project management.
  • Experience using AI tools for energy modeling, asset lifecycle planning, or automated reporting.

Key Responsibilities

Operational & Technical Management

  • Assist in managing departmental budgets, capital expenditures, preventive maintenance strategies, and project execution.
  • Oversee the maintenance and upkeep of all buildings, guest areas, employee facilities, and grounds, ensuring safety, security, and asset protection at all times.
  • Supervise the daily operations of the Engineering Department, ensuring timely completion and quality control of all tasks.
  • Manage the physical plant, including HVAC, refrigeration, plumbing, electrical, water treatment, industrial kitchen equipment, mechanical systems, and Fire & life safety systems.
  • Review, assign, track, and follow up on work orders for staff and external contractors through the hotel CMMS (Transcendent).

Preventative Maintenance & Asset Protection

  • Support the planning, scheduling, and execution of comprehensive preventative maintenance programs for all property systems and equipment.
  • Help prioritize maintenance needs across the resort to align with operational demands and long-term asset management strategies.
  • Ensure compliance with fire & life safety systems, emergency procedures, and regulatory maintenance requirements.

Energy Management & Sustainability

  • Monitor energy consumption and conduct detailed trend analyses to identify efficiency opportunities.
  • Assist in developing long-term energy management strategies alongside the Director of Engineering and third‑party consultants.
  • Support and execute all energy-related capital projects and sustainability initiatives across the property.

Leadership & Team Development

  • Lead, motivate, and mentor engineering team members, fostering a collaborative, efficient, and safety‑focused work environment.
  • Drive guest and employee satisfaction through effective communication, training, and professional development.

Promote positive working relationships across departments, ensuring seamless service delivery and operational support.

CORE WORK ACTIVITIES

Supporting management of Department Operations and Engineering Budgets

• Assists in effectively planning, scheduling and evaluating preventative maintenance programs.

• Helps establish priorities for total property maintenance needs.

• Supervises the day to day operations of Engineering.

• Assists in managing the physical plant including equipment, refrigeration, HVAC, plumbing, water treatment, electrical and life safety systems.

• Maintains and operates equipment at optimum effectiveness, efficiency and safety.

• Supervises distribution of repair work orders.

• Assists in maintaining grounds, meeting rooms, ballrooms, public space, restaurants, property vehicles and recreational facilities as needed.

• Acts as technical liaison for all departments in property.

• Supervises Engineering in the absence of the Director of Engineering.

• Recommends or arranges for additional services such as painting, repair work, renovations, and the replacement of furnishings and equipment.

• Selects and makes purchases of new equipment, supplies, and furnishings.

• Inspects and evaluates the physical condition of facilities in order to determine the type of work required.

• Manages parts, supplies and equipment inventories effectively by minimizing downtime and maximizing cash flow.

• Performs inspections effectively.

• Assists in evaluating and implementing new technologies, equipment and supplies.

• Assists in establishing and implementing an energy conservation program.

Maintaining Engineering Standards

• Helps ensure necessary permits and licenses for building and physical plant are obtained and kept current.

• Helps ensure regulatory compliance to facility regulations and safety standards.

• Ensures compliance with all Engineering departmental policies, standards and procedures.

• Ensures all employees have the proper supplies, equipment and uniforms.

Ensuring Exceptional Customer Service

• Displays leadership in guest hospitality by exemplifying excellent customer service and creating a positive atmosphere for guest relations.

• Interacts with guests to obtain feedback on product quality and service levels.

• Empowers employees to provide excellent customer service.

Conducting Human Resources Activities

• Supervises staffing levels to ensure that guest service, operational needs and financial objectives are met.

• Helps train employees in safety procedures.

• Assists in training other department employees in fire protection, safety and evacuation procedures.

• Provides feedback to employees based on observation of service behaviors.

• Assists in performing operational activities as necessary.
