Senior Director of Engineering

Position Summary

We are seeking an experienced Senior Director of Engineering to lead our software development organization and achieve technical excellence across our healthcare solutions portfolio. This role requires a hands-on technical leader who can balance strategic vision with deep engineering expertise, having personally navigated the complexities of software development while scaling teams and processes.

Key Responsibilities

Results & Technical Leadership

  • Plan and execute multiple impactful projects spread across multiple teams
  • Maintain hands-on technical expertise, engaging with technical implementation details to effectively represent team needs in architectural discussions to ensure decisions are being made that align with practical development realities
  • Serve as a technical bridge between teams and architecture leveraging deep technical knowledge and coding experience
  • Take end-to-end ownership of complex initiatives spanning multiple teams and domains
  • Set technical vision and strategy for major engineering initiatives, ensuring scalability, security, and healthcare compliance (HIPAA, HL7, FHIR)
  • Drive strategic decision-making across the organization, balancing technical depth with business impact
  • Partner with product and business leaders to shape engineering strategy as a key voice in defining customer value
  • Define, manage, and maintain meaningful metrics across teams, leveraging them to help with decision making that directly drive results

Organizational Development & Culture

  • Lead and develop engineering managers and senior ICs, building leadership capabilities across the organization
  • Design organizational structures that optimize current execution and future growth
  • Attract, hire, and retain diverse talent while fostering a culture of psychological safety and continuous learning
  • Serve as a calming influence during change and uncertainty, coaching teams through organizational complexity
  • Champion bold approaches and create environments where teams can experiment, learn, and own outcomes

Strategic Collaboration & Communication

  • Lead cross-functional collaboration, aligning engineering with product, design, and business teams
  • Establish scalable processes that enable transparency, efficiency, and continuous improvement
  • Communicate with clarity across all organizational levels, from technical teams to executive leadership
  • Drive operational excellence while ensuring sustainable execution and team well-being

Required Qualifications

  • 10+ years of software engineering experience with increasing leadership responsibilities
  • Minimum 5 years managing engineering teams, with experience leading managers
  • Proven track record scaling engineering organizations and managing 40+ engineers
  • Direct experience in regulated industries, preferably healthcare software solutions
  • History of hands-on coding and system design, with ability to dive deep into technical details
  • Track record of mentoring senior engineers and developing leadership capabilities
  • Strong business acumen with understanding of how engineering decisions impact company strategy

Technical Expertise

  • Proficiency in modern programming languages and distributed systems architecture
  • Deep understanding of cloud platforms, API development, and integration patterns
  • Knowledge of security best practices and compliance requirements in healthcare
  • Familiarity with DevOps practices, CI/CD pipelines, and infrastructure as code

Preferred Qualifications

  • Background in agile methodologies and experience at healthcare technology companies
  • Experience with healthcare data standards and interoperability
