Kratos has an exciting opportunity for a mid to senior level Software Development Engineer Manager. The position will support dynamic, agile projects implementing a SecDevOps approach across all phases of the software development lifecycle, to include design, development, test, and operational support / user feedback. The ideal candidate must be able to work independently as well as within a team setting on the design, implementation, and maintenance/troubleshooting of new and existing software solutions. This Software Development Engineer Manager position is a role based in Colorado Springs, CO. Responsibilities include, but are not limited to the following:

Technical Qualifications:

  • Strong background in Python, including experience developing automation, backend services, or data processing tools.
  • Working knowledge of CI/CD, Git-based workflows, and modern software practices (Agile/Scrum).
  • Familiarity with multi-project environments where software interfaces with systems or mission operations is a plus.
  • Knowledge of Container and Cloud implementation is a plus.

Functional Management Responsibilities:

  • Ensure engineers are effectively tasked and balanced across multiple projects.
  • Work closely with leadership to align team priorities with organizational goals and deadlines.
  • Conduct 1:1s, performance check-ins, and retrospectives to ensure high team health and productivity.
  • Support career development and advocate for the team's needs within leadership discussions.

Ideal Candidate Attributes:

  • Mid- to senior-level engineer comfortable shifting between technical and people leadership contexts.
  • Demonstrated ability to translate technical challenges into actionable work for diverse engineering teams.
  • Strong communicator who can interface with program leadership, product owners, and other functional leads.

Experience And Skills

  • Bachelor of Science in a technical discipline (Computer Science, Software, Electrical, Mechanical, or related degree) and at least 10 years relevant work experience (willing to consider a range of work and educational levels)
  • Strong background in Python, including experience developing automation, backend services, or data processing tools.
  • C++ backend implementations, driver development
  • Proven ability to design software solutions to complex engineering problems & accurately estimate the effort to get them accomplished
  • Proven ability to lead teams in software development, and mentor/coach newer software engineers
  • Proven ability and experience in defining and developing requirements with customers, defining/architecting a solution to satisfy them, and developing the test methodology to verify them
  • Long-term team readiness, skill development, compliance with internal policies, and ensuring systems are properly provisioned and maintained
  • Manages hiring, performance reviews, training requirements, morale, and disciplinary actions for the software team
  • Ability to learn, take ownership, and deliver high-quality results in an unstructured environment
  • Experience using Atlassian tools and working in an Agile software development environment
  • Applicants selected will be subject to a government security investigation and must meet eligibility requirements for access to classified information. U.S. citizenship is required.

Preferred Skills And Experience

  • Experience and or knowledge of OpenShift, Kafka, AWS, Azure, implementations
  • Basic knowledge of satellite operations, signal processing, digital communications theory, network communications,
  • Container and cloud development
  • Structured Query Language (SQL)
  • Lead Software Architecture Design experience
  • TS/SCI Security Clearance

The grade-based pay range for this job is listed below. Individual salaries within that range are determined through a wide variety of factors including but not limited to education, experience, knowledge, and skills.

Competitive salary based on experience and education

Salary Range: $130,000-$170,000
