Director of Engineering

Location: Omaha, NE

MUST-HAVES (Please read first)

  • Bachelor’s degree in Engineering from an accredited institution
  • 15+ years of experience in energy sector engineering design and/or operations
  • 5+ years experience with combustion turbine and/or reciprocating engine project design, permitting, construction, or operations
  • Proven ability to build, mentor, and lead multidisciplinary technical teams
  • Demonstrated project management experience, including delivery of projects on schedule, budget, and quality
  • Experience supporting major equipment supply contracts, LTSAs, and EPC contracts
  • Strong analytical, problem-solving, and organizational skills
  • Excellent communication, leadership, and interpersonal skills

Role Overview

The Director of Engineering leads all technical aspects of natural gas–fueled power projects, including origination, technology selection, engineering design, contracting, and project execution. This role also provides mentorship and supervision for engineering staff while collaborating across cross-functional teams including development, operations, finance, asset management, and external stakeholders.

The role may include technical support for carbon capture, pipeline and sequestration (CCS) projects, technical due diligence for acquisitions, and limited support for operating power generation assets.

Key Responsibilities

Leadership & Team Development

  • Lead, mentor, and develop a team of technical professionals, setting priorities and goals
  • Foster professional growth aligned with company culture and core values
  • Serve as a subject matter expert on thermal power generation technologies
  • Build and maintain relationships with key external partners and stakeholders

Project Development & Construction

  • Oversee technoeconomic analyses to evaluate project configurations
  • Direct layout analysis, conceptual design, and technology selection for optimal project performance
  • Guide development of project schedules, cost estimates, and performance metrics
  • Conduct technical risk assessments to inform project priorities and decisions
  • Manage preparation of technical specifications and bid processes for major equipment and engineering services
  • Oversee site feasibility reviews, including constructability, geotechnical, hydrology, and permitting considerations
  • Coordinate third-party engineering and construction services and ensure integrated project execution

Asset Management & Acquisitions

  • Lead technical due diligence for corporate M&A and acquisition projects
  • Review design documents, operating reports, and maintenance inspections for prospective assets
  • Provide advisory support for asset upgrades and capital improvement projects
  • Maintain cost models to inform asset valuation and strategic decisions
  • Conduct technical risk assessments and provide recommendations to financial teams

Preferred Qualifications

  • Master’s degree in Engineering or MBA
  • Degree in Mechanical or Chemical Engineering
  • Professional Engineer (PE) registration and/or PMP certification
  • 20+ years of experience in conventional thermal power project engineering
  • Hands-on experience with heat balances and thermal performance modeling
  • Familiarity with bulk electric system interconnection processes
  • Experience using GIS for project planning and analysis
