JOB TITLE: Director of Engineering

QUALIFICATION REQUIREMENTS:
Candidate must have a minimum of 7 years experience as a Director of Engineering in a large hotel environment, preferably luxury properties. New York City experience is needed. Ability to demonstrate strategic thinking and planning, in overseeing the entire Engineering and Maintenance operation as it pertains to the Hotel and Co-Ops. The position requires ability to direct, lead, train, and support all Engineering Department Associates.
Prior experience must include handling extensive renovations, maintaining business contacts with all vendors, budgeting, preparing Purchase Orders, demonstrating technical and mechanical oversight of large plants/properties, obtaining multiple quotations, and having project management.
Applicant must have exceptional organizational, administrative, and time management skills, as well as an ability to calculate and work with numbers. Sprinkler, Gravity Tank, New York City Fire Safety Director and Standpipe licenses are required. The position requires hands-on knowledge of all mechanical/technical functions.
Candidate must have strong computer literacy especially with Microsoft Word, PowerPoint, Outlook, and Excel, along with the ability to prepare and to make presentations to diverse audiences, including Corporate Office. Position requires flexibility in scheduling according to business need, including being able to work weekends and Overnight shifts. Position requires being on call and available 24 hours a day, 7 days a week.
Candidate must demonstrate strong understanding of working in a diverse and fast paced luxury hotel environment, the ability to team build in such a work environment.
Exceptional, clear communication skills, verbal and written, are required.
The ability to provide all services needed and mandated by the Co-Ops, Internal and External Guests. The position necessitates someone who can directly liaise with the Co-Ops and their representatives in order to carry out detailed and timely requests.
Position necessitates physical activity, the ability to bend, reach, crouch, and to lift items up to 70 pounds, the ability to stand and walk for prolonged periods of time, the ability to work and maneuver in close quarters, and the ability to withstand heat and cold temperatures related to the job function.
JOB FUNCTIONS:
- The ability to assist in the hiring, training, supervising, scheduling, coaching and counseling, and directing all aspects of the Operations’ Associates within the Department.
- The ability to support and direct the Assistant Director of Engineering in his/her role within the Engineering Department.
- The ability to handle, direct, and participate in any Hotel emergency.
- The ability to ensure that employee performance management processes are carefully prepared and delivered.
- The ability to plan and to execute effective preventive maintenance schedules for the Hotel.
- The ability to plan and implement procedures, systems and controls to ensure efficient maintenance procedures are carried out.
- The ability to directly supervise staff in carrying out work schedules as well as spot-checking to verify quality and employee performance.
- The ability to maintain proper inventories required for the building and Associates.
- The ability to maintain par stocks and the distribution of items.
- The ability to ensure timely and accurate sub meter, chemical treatment and engine room logs.
- The ability to handle the purchasing of equipment replacement parts and repairs. This includes contacting vendors for best prices, writing purchase orders, receiving goods and completing projects.
- The ability to ensure that work order/request system is properly executed and that items from the logbook are followed up on.
- The ability to assist in developing and updating comprehensive departmental policies and manuals.
- The ability to ensure that all meter readings on heat, light and power are taken on a daily basis and reviewed for consumption.
- The ability to assist in compiling a monthly consumption report on heat, light and power to include electricity, gas, steam and water.
- The ability to set-up fire line safety system, valve locations and other emergency procedures that involves the department.
- The ability to ensure effective communication and good relations between the maintenance department and other departments in the hotel.
- The ability to prepare and follow through on any projects as outlined by senior management.
- The ability to ensure all areas of the hotel are patrolled and inspected on a regular basis.
- The ability to ensure all maintenance staff are in uniform and well groomed.
- The ability to ensure timely completion of all assigned responsibilities.
- The ability to assist in developing and maintaining an energy conservation program allowing the hotel to meet its annual budget targets.
- The ability to prepare/review requisitions for purchase and work orders and liaise efficiently with the Assistant Director of Engineering.
- The ability to conduct oneself in a professional manner at all times to reflect the high standards of The Pierre, A Taj Hotel and encourage staff to do the same.
- The ability to maintain a good working relationship with other employees, providing instruction and encouragement as needed.
- The ability to ensure a clean, neat and organized work area.
- The ability to attend and participate in all required meetings.
- The ability to respond properly in any hotel emergency of safety situation.
- The ability to perform other tasks or projects as assigned by hotel management and staff.
