Job Overview
As the Director of Engineering Operations, you will assume a pivotal role in safeguarding the condition, safety, and efficiency of our luxury hotel facility. You will lead a dedicated team of professionals, taking charge of the maintenance of the building's physical structure, mechanical, electrical, HVAC systems, and ensure strict adherence to energy conservation and preventative maintenance programs. To excel in this role, a minimum of 5 years of engineering management experience is required, along with technical training in HVAC, refrigeration, electrical, plumbing, and mechanical systems. We expect a hands-on approach, and luxury hotel experience is highly preferred.
Key Responsibilities
Engineering Operations Oversight: Oversee the maintenance, rehabilitation, and overall upkeep of the luxury hotel facility, including the building structure, HVAC systems, electrical components, plumbing, and all related equipment. This responsibility requires a hands-on approach to maintenance activities and project execution.
Assessment and Inspection: Regularly conduct comprehensive walk-throughs to visually and physically assess the safety and efficiency of the hotel’s physical structure, mechanical systems, electrical components, HVAC systems, and related equipment. Assign and meticulously verify the completion of routine maintenance for all public spaces, meeting rooms, outlets, back-of-house areas, and hotel grounds.
Engineering Management: Assign, manage, and ensure the timely and high-quality completion of repair, replacement, and capital expenditure (CAPEX) projects across the hotel. Maintain strict adherence to all corporate budget and purchasing policies, including overseeing outside contractor bids and schedules.
Team Leadership and Development: Build, lead, and manage a capable Engineering team, covering all aspects of hiring, training, supervising, resource allocation, staff appraisals, and, if necessary, implementing disciplinary actions. Establish a High-Performance Culture by setting clear job performance criteria and empowering the team to resolve issues efficiently.
Communication & Financial Management: Maintain open and effective communication with the General Manager and department heads regarding the condition of the building structure and equipment. Provide cost-effective and strategically sound proposals for maintenance and improvements. Effectively develop and manage the engineering budget to ensure financial efficiency.
Energy and Building Management (BMS): Systematically maintain and document effective energy management and preventative maintenance programs, utilizing the Building Management System (BMS) for optimal operation to contribute to cost control and sustainability. Analyze utility consumption trends and predict energy forecasts.
Safety, Regulatory Compliance, and Asset Protection: Uphold the safety and security of the property by effectively managing the physical plant, equipment, and systems. Ensure full compliance with Cal OSHA regulations, Fire/Life Safety codes, and all other state, local, and federal regulatory guidelines. Work closely with the Director of Security and maintain tracking logs of regular equipment maintenance to satisfy audits from OSHA and quarterly insurance risk manager walkthroughs. Consistently keep all building and equipment licenses, permits, and certifications up to date.
Emergency Response Leadership: Assume the lead role in the emergency response team for all facility-related issues, including developing, practicing, and leading the facility’s rapid and effective response to critical situations such as power outages, plumbing failures, and fire system alarms.
Physical Requirements
While performing the duties of this job, the employee is regularly required to stand, walk; use hands to finger, handle or feel objects, tools or controls; reach with hands and arms; talk and hear. The employee is occasionally required to sit. The employee shall be able to exert 20 to 50 pounds of force occasionally, and/or 10 to 25 pounds of force frequently, and/or greater than negligible up to 10 pounds of force to constantly move objects.
Working Conditions
Subject to long periods of walking and standing, outdoor weather conditions, chemical exposure from solvents and cleansers, moving mechanical parts, high and low electrical voltage. The noise level in the work environment is usually loud.

Qualifications
- Minimum of 5 years of engineering management experience in a hospitality environment.
- Minimum of 10 years’ experience in general building maintenance and/or construction, or an equivalent combination of education and experience.
- Luxury hotel experience is highly preferred.
- Technical training in building structures, HVAC, refrigeration, electrical, plumbing, and mechanical systems is required.
- Master Technician licensing is highly desirable.
- Knowledgeable in Information Technology relating to low-voltage systems. Including familiarity with systems like ALICE and HotSOS which are essential for engineering efficiency.
- Strong verbal and written communication skills in English are essential for effective communication with the General Manager, department heads, and external vendors.
- Proficiency in Microsoft applications (Excel, Word) and advanced report generation (e.g., utility consumption analysis, PM scheduling compliance).
- Strong mathematical skills for interpreting and analyzing electrical, mechanical, and building systems schematics and utility consumption trends.
- Physical capability to perform essential tasks like bending, stooping, walking, and lifting to 50 lbs.
- Flexibility to work various shifts, including nights, weekends, and holidays.
