JOB DESCRIPTION

Job Summary

The Manager, Software Engineering will lead Green Dot’s Risk Platform functions, overseeing a combined team of software engineers and QA professionals responsible for developing, testing, and maintaining backend services, APIs, and business platforms. This role is accountable for delivering highly available, reliable, and scalable applications that meet Green Dot and partner SLAs.

The ideal candidate is a hands-on technical leader with strong design and coding skills, capable of driving architecture discussions and building proof-of-concepts when needed. This leader will foster operational excellence, enforce rigorous quality and compliance standards, and mentor a world-class engineering and QA team. Success requires balancing strategic planning with execution, managing concurrent projects, and ensuring timely, high-quality delivery.

This engineering leader will be experienced in resource planning, building cross functional business partnerships and driving strategic planning. The leader is also expected to be a good communicator who can interface easily with internal and external stakeholders. Last but not the least, maintaining an operational mindset for post-production support and system reliability.

Job Responsibilities

Success in this role will be determined via the leader's ability to deliver upon the following:

  • Lead and manage a combined team of software engineers and QA professionals responsible for developing, testing, and maintaining backend, web, mobile, and API platforms.
  • Define, implement, and enforce coding standards, QA methodologies, automation strategies, and best practices aligned with the company’s technology roadmap.
  • Ensure compliance with regulatory, security, and quality requirements across all software development and QA activities.
  • Manage delivery of projects with high quality and on-time execution, maintaining operational rigor and supporting systems post-production rollout.
  • Experience with modern technology stack in the areas of Cloud, API, Microservices and re-platforming.
  • Collaborate closely with cross-functional teams (Product, Revenue, Operations, Marketing, UX) to integrate development and QA processes into CI/CD pipelines and deliver high-quality releases.
  • Provide career development, mentorship, and performance feedback to team members, fostering a culture of quality, transparency, and continuous learning.
  • Lead resource planning, strategic planning, and manage geographically distributed teams across multiple time zones.
  • Interface with internal and external stakeholders, including high-profile partners, to represent the technology function.
  • Continuously evaluate and introduce new solutions to improve the technology stack, including cloud migration and modernization of legacy systems.
  • Understand and support existing legacy systems, ensuring effective maintenance and enhancement as needed.
  • Demonstrate strong communication skills at both engineering and business levels.

Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s degree in Computer Science or related field (or equivalent experience).
  • 8+ years in software development and QA, with at least 2 -3 years in a leadership role (or 5-7 years managing engineering teams for senior roles).
  • Experience managing concurrent engineering projects and geographically distributed teams.
  • Strong technical expertise in:
    • Test automation, performance testing, and QA methodologies
    • Modern technology stacks (Cloud, API, Microservices, re-platforming)
    • Service-oriented and event-driven architectures
    • CI/CD platforms and tools (e.g., Selenium, JMeter, Postman)
    • Hands-on development, preferably with Microsoft Stack
    • Cloud-based solutions and migration (Azure and on-prem environments)
  • Experience with service-oriented and event-driven system architectures, building high-performance distributed systems.
  • Experience building strong partnerships with other job functions, such as Product, Marketing, and UX.
  • Excellent leadership, communication, and stakeholder management skills.
  • Ability to drive design discussions, troubleshoot legacy code, and implement enhancements.
  • Strong desire to understand the root cause of issues and details of systems, get hands-on with data and analysis to evaluate how the team and the product are growing.
  • Experience in regulated environments (e.g., fintech) is a plus.
  • Strong operational mindset, adaptability to change, and a passion for continuous improvement.
  • Must be knowledgeable about industry trends, best practices, and change management.

PAY RANGE

The targeted base salary for this position is $142,600 to $196,100 per year. The final compensation will be determined by a number of factors such as qualifications, expertise, and the candidate’s geographical location.
