Director of Engineering

A Series B, VC-backed FinTech building market-leading identity, risk, and fraud prevention infrastructure is hiring a Director of Engineering to lead and scale its API and backend engineering organisation.
The company works with major U.S. financial institutions, credit unions, and high-growth fintechs to prevent synthetic fraud, identity theft, and first-party fraud at account opening and beyond. The platform is deeply technical, data-driven, and mission-critical.
This is a senior leadership role in a fast-growth environment, reporting into executive leadership and owning core platform delivery.
Responsibilities
- Own the roadmap and delivery for API products and core backend services, with a focus on scalability, security, and performance
- Lead, mentor, and scale an initial team of ~12–14 engineers, growing the organisation to 20+
- Manage managers and senior ICs, setting a high bar for execution and technical quality
- Partner closely with Product, Data Science, Infrastructure, and Executive leadership to align engineering with business goals
- Drive architectural decisions and platform evolution to support product differentiation
- Establish best practices across engineering workflows, including reliability, observability, incident response, and on-call standards
- Maintain hands-on technical involvement through code reviews, production debugging, and selective feature delivery
Requirements
- 5+ years of engineering leadership experience
- Experience managing managers and teams of 15-20+ engineers
- Proven track record scaling teams from early stage to growth stage
- Strong backend and API development background
- Deep system design and architecture expertise
- Hands-on leader able to write and ship production code
- Strong experience with AWS; ML exposure is a plus
- Comfortable operating in collaborative environments where technical decisions are made as a team
