Software Development Manager Role Overview

The Software Development Manager is a people-first technical leader responsible for building strong, capable, and continuously improving development teams. This role focuses on developing engineers, strengthening delivery practices, and creating the conditions in which high-quality software can be produced sustainably. The manager provides technical guidance and context, supports sound decision-making, and partners closely with Product Owners and business stakeholders to translate goals into effective, maintainable solutions. Success in this role is measured not by personal technical output, but by the growth, effectiveness, and resilience of the team and reliability of the systems they deliver.

Software Development Manager Responsibilities

  • Demonstrates the Company’s mission, while successfully performing its core values related to integrity, service, excellence, stability, strength, respect, and teamwork.
  • Serves the development team and leads them within the organization, fostering an environment where development adheres to FMNE development standards, architecture guidelines, and industry best practices.
  • Support the full lifecycle of the FMNE systems in both the cloud and on-premises environments, including unit testing, technical documentation, deployment, and ongoing maintenance.
  • Build and sustain a high-performing team by driving developer certification, ongoing training, and continuous learning through internal programs, external education resources, and hands-on development opportunities to achieve deep, well-rounded expertise across all managed systems.
  • Coach team members to excellence by strategically aligning roles with individual skills, providing challenging opportunities, and supporting meaningful career and professional growth.
  • Build, mentor, and lead a high-performing software development team using Agile principles such as fostering collaboration, continuous improvement, iterative and measured delivery, with rapid feedback loops.
  • Provide technical and architectural guidance while cultivating a culture of engineering excellence and accountability.
  • Collaborate with the team to set department-wide standards for code quality, configuration best practices, security controls, performance, and scalability in all Guidewire and related development efforts.
  • Champions robust security, access controls, permissions, and compliance are foundational in all solutions and systems.
  • Validate that delivered solutions fully meet business requirements, user expectations, and quality benchmarks through thorough follow up and stakeholder acceptance processes.
  • Act as a trusted technical advisor and escalation point for the team, business units, and leadership by promoting transparent communication and knowledge sharing.
  • Provide regular technical training, coaching, and career development support to Software Developers, enabling skill growth and succession planning.
  • Represent the development team in cross-departmental initiatives, contribute to broader technology strategy, and drive adoption of Guidewire innovations to maximize business value.
  • Partner with Product Owners, business stakeholders, agents, and cross-functional teams to shape system architecture, translate business needs into technical designs, and drive alignment on solution direction.
  • Regular and timely attendance in the office is an essential function of the position.

Software Development Manager Skills and Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s degree in computer science, Information Technology, or a related field; or equivalent combination of education and experience.
  • Demonstrated ability to coach and mentor individuals across all skill levels, driving them toward technical and professional excellence.
  • Proven hands-on experience in software development, including proficiency with SQL Server (or comparable relational database technologies); equivalent combinations of education, training, and relevant work experience will be considered.
  • Experience in insurance, finance, or closely related regulated industries is preferred.
  • Strong problem-solving skills and the ability to work as part of a team, providing both collaborative and independently driven work.
  • Self-motivated with excellent initiative; able to prioritize tasks, recognize time-sensitive responsibilities, and manage workload effectively with minimal supervision.
  • Superior organizational skills combined with analytical thinking to address complex challenges efficiently.
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills, with the ability to convey technical concepts clearly to diverse audiences.
