About The Role
We are seeking a highly skilled and experienced Manager of Software Engineering 2 to join our dynamic team based out of Huntsville, AL. This leadership position involves overseeing a team of engineers, managing day-to-day operations, and driving the successful development and implementation of software solutions for our Space Systems Missile Defense Integration (MDI) Business Unit Program. The role balances technical program responsibilities with team management, requiring a strategic mindset, excellent communication skills, and a strong technical background. The successful candidate will be instrumental in shaping engineering practices, fostering a culture of continuous improvement, and ensuring the delivery of high-quality software products that meet evolving customer needs.
Qualifications
Applicants should possess a minimum of 8 years of experience with a Bachelor's degree in Software Engineering or a related STEM discipline, or 6 years with a Master's degree, or 4 years with a PhD. Proven expertise in developing software using object-oriented programming languages such as C, C++, or Java is essential. Candidates must have experience analyzing complex technical problems and devising effective solutions within Linux-based development environments. An active secret clearance is required, along with prior leadership experience in managing technical teams and overseeing staffing, metrics, and training resources. Strong business acumen, customer interface skills, and excellent organizational and communication capabilities are also necessary. Preferred qualifications include a Master's degree in a STEM field and proven experience leading diverse technical teams across multiple locations.
Responsibilities
- Lead the development and advancement of engineering practices, identifying skill gaps, and recruiting top talent through strategic hiring and internship programs.
- Provide day-to-day management, including performance assessments, career counseling, employee recognition, and conflict resolution for a team of 10-18 engineers.
- Develop and implement software updates aligned with customer requirements, ensuring scalable, maintainable, and high-quality products.
- Foster a culture of innovation, ethics, and integrity while challenging traditional approaches to achieve continuous improvement.
- Collaborate effectively with cross-disciplinary teams, including program managers, other engineering disciplines, and senior leadership to meet project goals.
- Prioritize tasks, manage resources efficiently, and operate with limited oversight to accomplish program objectives.
- Apply systems thinking to ensure product solutions are comprehensive and meet end-user needs.
- Support proposal development, review, and approval processes to secure new business opportunities.
- Develop strategic plans for sales and marketing, identify key markets, and execute communication strategies to support business growth.
- Regularly report on the status of major programs and opportunities to senior management, ensuring alignment with organizational goals.
- Champion organizational change initiatives to maintain competitive advantage and foster a high-performance environment.
