About The Role

We are seeking a highly skilled and experienced Manager of Software Engineering 2 to join our team in Huntsville, Alabama. This leadership role involves overseeing a team of engineers and managing critical software development projects within our Space Systems Missile Defense Integration (MDI) Business Unit Program. The successful candidate will be responsible for guiding day-to-day operations, performance management, and strategic planning to ensure the delivery of high-quality software solutions that meet evolving customer needs. Approximately 25% of the role will involve management responsibilities, including mentoring, recruiting, and developing talent, while the remaining 75% will focus on program execution, technical oversight, and project delivery. The role requires active security clearance and involves travel up to 10% to support various project needs.

Qualifications

The ideal candidate will possess a minimum of 8 years of experience in software engineering or related STEM fields, with at least 6 years holding a master's degree or 4 years with a PhD. A strong background in developing software using object-oriented programming languages such as C, C++, or Java is essential. Candidates must have experience working within Linux-based development environments and demonstrate the ability to analyze complex problems and develop innovative solutions with limited guidance. An active secret clearance is required, along with prior experience in technical leadership roles managing teams and projects. Knowledge of staffing, engineering metrics, and resource planning is also necessary. Business acumen, excellent communication skills, and a proven track record of managing large teams and resolving issues proactively are highly valued. Preferred qualifications include a master's degree in software engineering or a STEM discipline and experience leading diverse technical teams across multiple locations.

Responsibilities

  • Lead and develop engineering practices, identify skill gaps, and implement strategies for recruiting and retaining top talent, including interns and college graduates.
  • Demonstrate strong leadership to drive team performance and achieve organizational goals sustainably.
  • Establish and maintain effective communication and collaboration with internal teams, external stakeholders, and customers.
  • Uphold high standards of ethics and integrity while fostering an innovative environment that challenges traditional approaches.
  • Create and nurture diverse, inclusive teams with high engagement levels through mentoring and coaching initiatives.
  • Balance technical, interpersonal, and business skills to guide project success and team development.

  • Apply systems thinking principles to ensure software products are scalable, maintainable, and aligned with user needs.
  • Collaborate closely with directors, program managers, and other engineering disciplines to coordinate efforts and optimize project outcomes.
  • Champion organizational change to enhance competitiveness and operational efficiency.
  • Support proposal development, review, and approval processes to secure new business opportunities.
  • Develop and implement strategic plans, including multi-year sales and marketing strategies, to drive growth and profitability.
  • Design and execute marketing and communication strategies to promote program capabilities and successes.
  • Regularly report on the status of major program opportunities and progress toward achieving business targets to senior management.
