Description
We are seeking a highly experienced, strategic, and hands-on Director of Engineering to lead all engineering and facility operations for a luxury, dual-branded Marriott property located on the Country Club Plaza.
This role requires a proven leader from a full-service hotel environment who brings both technical expertise and operational sophistication. The Director of Engineering will be responsible for ensuring the highest standards of facility performance, safety, reliability, and guest comfort, while driving preventive maintenance excellence, capital planning, and cost control.
As a key member of the leadership team, this individual will influence operational strategy, protect asset value, and ensure alignment with Marriott brand standards and ownership expectations.
This position reports directly to the Hotel General Manager.
Key Responsibilities
Leadership & Team Development
- Provide strong, visible leadership to the Engineering department, setting clear expectations, accountability standards, and performance goals
- Recruit, develop, and retain a highly skilled engineering team capable of operating at a full-service, high-volume hotel level
- Foster a culture of safety, urgency, ownership, and continuous improvement
- Partner cross-functionally with Operations, Rooms, and Food & Beverage leadership to support overall hotel performance
Facility & Systems Management
- Oversee the operation, maintenance, and repair of all building systems including HVAC, electrical, plumbing, refrigeration, kitchen equipment, laundry systems, and life safety systems
- Ensure all equipment and infrastructure operate at optimal efficiency with minimal downtime
- Maintain a deep working knowledge of all property systems including rooftop units, BMS/controls, fire alarm systems, sprinkler systems, and utility shutoffs
- Conduct routine inspections of guest rooms, public spaces, back-of-house areas, and mechanical rooms to ensure compliance with brand and safety standards
Preventive Maintenance & Asset Protection
- Develop, implement, and continuously improve a robust preventive maintenance program across all areas of the property
- Track and analyze PM completion rates, equipment performance, and recurring issues to drive proactive solutions
- Protect the long-term value of the asset through disciplined maintenance practices and timely repairs
Financial Management & Capital Planning
- Develop and manage the Engineering department budget, including labor, parts, contracts, and utilities
- Drive cost control initiatives while maintaining high operational standards
- Lead capital expenditure planning, including identifying, prioritizing, and executing large-scale repair and replacement projects
- Solicit and evaluate competitive bids for services, equipment, and contracts
Compliance, Safety & Risk Management
- Serve as the property’s Life Safety Director, ensuring full compliance with all local, state, and federal regulations
- Maintain compliance with Marriott brand standards, safety protocols, and audit requirements
- Oversee emergency preparedness, response protocols, and safety training for the engineering team
- Maintain accurate documentation including maintenance logs, inspection reports, warranties, and compliance records
Vendor & Project Management
- Manage vendor relationships to ensure quality workmanship, adherence to timelines, and cost effectiveness
- Oversee third-party contractors and ensure all work meets brand and property standards
- Lead and execute engineering-related projects, renovations, and system upgrades
Operational Excellence
- Ensure 24/7 engineering coverage through effective scheduling and on-call support
- Serve as Manager on Duty as scheduled
- Respond promptly and effectively to guest and operational needs, ensuring minimal disruption to the guest experience
- Maintain the highest standards of cleanliness and presentation across all interior and exterior areas of the property
Qualifications
- REQUIRED: Extensive experience in a full-service hotel environment as a Director of Engineering, Chief Engineer, or Assistant Chief Engineer
- Demonstrated success managing engineering operations in a high-volume, complex hotel setting
- Strong technical expertise across HVAC, electrical, plumbing, refrigeration, and life safety systems
- Proven leadership ability with experience building, developing, and managing high performing teams
- Strong financial acumen with experience managing budgets, forecasting, and capital planning
- Exceptional organizational, problem-solving, and decision-making skills
- Ability to read, interpret, and develop technical documents, reports, and operational procedures
- Strong communication skills with the ability to interact effectively with ownership, executive leadership, team members, and vendors
- Hands-on capability with general maintenance disciplines (carpentry, electrical, plumbing, etc.)
- Ability to lift to 50 pounds
Preferred Qualifications
- Marriott brand experience strongly preferred
- Experience with dual-branded or large-scale properties
- Experience working in lifestyle, luxury, or high-profile urban hotels
- Prior involvement in capital projects, renovations, or major system upgrades
Compensation & Benefits
- Competitive salary: $65,000 – $75,000 annually (based on experience)
