This role will be within our flagship platform, AutoTrader.ca, Canada’s #1 automotive marketplace, attracting over 25 million visits each month.
Job Overview
We’re hiring an experienced Software Engineering Manager to run two teams building our marketplace platform in Toronto. You will build and grow high-performing teams, establish delivery predictability, embed product thinking into engineering decisions, and lead the teams for our International Marketplace.
What You'll Own
- People leadership for two teams (~10 engineers total): hiring, coaching, career growth, 1:1s, performance reviews.
- Delivery and roadmap execution: unblock cross-team dependencies, ensure predictable delivery and quality.
- Platform-level coordination: reliability, SLOs, developer experience and operational processes.
- Adoption and best practices for AI-assisted development and product features; coach teams to use AI productively and safely.
- Partner with Product Managers & Director to shape product strategy and ensure engineering decisions strongly reflect product trade-offs.
Must-Haves (Non-negotiables)
- Proven engineering people manager with experience managing multiple teams or multiple engineering streams.
- High AI literacy: daily user of LLM tools (ChatGPT, Codex, Claude Code etc.), able to articulate AI best practices and operational concerns.
- Strong technical background: AWS/Cloud, frontend (TypeScript / Node / Next.js / React), backend (Java; Spring Boot is a plus). Solid architecture judgement and platform thinking.
- Product mindset: able to challenge product decisions, translate business goals into engineering outcomes.
- Authorized to work in Canada; based in Toronto area and able to be onsite at least 2 days/week.
- Comfortable with change and a fast-paced environment.
Nice-To-Haves
- Experience with microservices, Spring Boot, Kubernetes, Terraform/CloudFormation, observability (Prometheus/Datadog), platform/DEVEX ownership.
- Prior experience in marketplace or classifieds-type e-commerce products or platforms.

Compensation
The base salary range for this position is CAD $140,000 – CAD 190,000.
This range reflects the expected compensation at the time of posting. The final offer may vary and can be higher based on relevant skills, experience, location, and market conditions. Based on the role the total rewards package may also include benefits, bonus, and other employee offerings.
